Our Story
Intro: Most companies write their origin story to sound inevitable — like everything was planned from the start and every decision was genius in hindsight. Ours wasn’t like that. We started small, followed where our customers led us, made decisions that didn’t always work out perfectly, and built something we’re genuinely proud of through nearly two decades of showing up and doing the work. This is the honest version.
How It Started — 2006
It didn’t begin with diplomas. In 2006 we launched a small novelty certificate site — the kind of thing you’d give as a gag gift. World’s Best Golfer. Master Fisherman. Certificates for things that don’t come with certificates. It was lighthearted, it was fun, and the equipment we used to produce them was genuinely good.
That equipment is what changed everything. Customers would see the quality of what we were producing and start asking — could you do a diploma? What about a transcript? We said yes, figured it out, added a few layouts to the catalog, and the requests kept coming. By 2007 we had expanded far enough beyond novelty certificates that it made sense to launch a dedicated home for what we were actually becoming — and DiplomaCompany.com was born.
The catalog started small. A handful of high school layouts, a few college formats, transcripts added as customers asked for them. We built it the same way we’ve built everything since — one request at a time, learning what customers actually needed and making sure we could deliver it properly before adding it to what we offered.
Raising the Bar Early — 2007
From the beginning we operated differently than most sites in this space. In 2007, while most competitors were email-only operations with multi-day response times, we became the first in our niche to offer live chat and toll-free phone support. The idea was simple — if someone is trusting you with a custom order, they should be able to reach a real person quickly. That philosophy has driven every customer service decision we’ve made since.
Moving to the Midwest — 2012
By 2012 the business had grown enough that we made a deliberate decision to relocate operations to Chicago. The reasoning was straightforward — we wanted to be closer to our suppliers, and a central Midwest location made nationwide logistics more efficient. For a production operation shipping physical documents across the country every day, geography matters. It was the right call for where we were at that point in the business.
We started in the West Loop and genuinely loved the city from day one. Cubs games, the Art Institute, doing our best Ferris Bueller impressions on weekends — Chicago has a way of getting into you. Over the years we moved around the city the way businesses do when they’re growing — West Loop first, then Lincoln Park, eventually settling into Humboldt Park. Each move made sense at the time and each neighborhood left its mark on us. Thirteen years in Chicago will do that.
What we didn’t fully anticipate was the friction that came from separating production from our support and corporate operations, which remained rooted in Virginia. Managing two centers of gravity across that distance created coordination challenges that compounded over time — slower communication between teams, less consistency in the customer experience, and the kind of inefficiency that’s hard to see from inside until it’s clearly affecting the work. We ran that way for over a decade, kept the quality high through discipline and process, and eventually made the decision to fix it properly.
Making the Guarantee Official — 2014
We had always stood behind our work informally — if something wasn’t right we fixed it, that was simply how we operated. But in 2014 we made it official, formalizing and branding our satisfaction guarantee and extending it to a full 90 days. At the time every other site in our space was operating on an all-sales-final basis. Offering a 90-day window — with real resolution options including reprints, credits, and refunds — was a meaningful statement about the confidence we had in what we were producing and the kind of company we wanted to be known as.
It remains one of the things we’re most proud of. Not because it’s a marketing advantage, but because in nearly two decades of honoring it we’ve learned that how you handle a problem tells customers more about you than how you handle an easy sale.
Investing in Better Technology — 2020
In 2020 we made a significant investment in our production capabilities, introducing raised seal and embossed lettering technology through layered printing. It sounds technical but the practical result was straightforward — our documents went from looking authentic to feeling authentic in a way that hadn’t been possible before at this level of production.
Before this investment, the industry standard for raised seals involved embossing powders and heat guns — a manual process that produced clumpy, uneven, single-color results that looked noticeably different from a real institutional seal up close. Our layered printing approach produces sharp, vibrant, multi-color raised details that hold up under scrutiny in a way the old method simply couldn’t.
The same year we achieved PCI DSS compliance and implemented multi-layered fraud detection and security monitoring across our payment systems — infrastructure that many sites in our category still haven’t invested in.
Coming Home — 2025
In early 2025 we made the decision we probably should have made sooner — we consolidated everything back to Virginia. Production, fulfillment, customer support, and corporate operations all under one roof in the greater Richmond area.
Richmond is where this all started. It’s home in the way that a city becomes home when you’ve built something in it — the kind of place where you know which coffee shop to go to before a long day, where Carytown feels like your neighborhood even when you’ve been away, where catching a Flying Squirrels game on a summer evening feels exactly right. Chicago was an adventure and we don’t regret it. But coming back felt like exhaling.
The difference operationally was immediate. Designers and support staff working in the same building means questions get answered in minutes rather than hours. Quality control issues surface and get resolved before they become patterns. The customer experience became more consistent because the people responsible for it could actually talk to each other in real time. It’s the kind of operational clarity that’s hard to describe until you’ve felt it on both sides of the comparison.
We’re a better operation for it. And honestly — we’re happier for it too.
Independent Reviews — Late 2025
Later in 2025 we partnered with Reviews.io to bring verified independent customer reviews to our site for the first time. We’d accumulated years of customer feedback through various channels but had never committed to a third-party verification platform that gave customers confidence the reviews they were reading were genuine. Reviews.io fills that gap — every review on our site through that platform is verified against a real transaction, which means what you’re reading reflects real customer experiences rather than curated testimonials.
Where We Are Now
Nearly two decades in, the catalog that started with a handful of layouts now covers thousands of high school, college, university, and GED formats across the U.S., Canada, and internationally. The equipment that started with novelty gag certificates now produces documents detailed enough that customers regularly ask us if what they’re holding is real.
We’re still the same print shop we were in 2007 in the ways that matter — we pick up the phone, we stand behind the work, and we treat every order as something worth getting right. Everything else has just gotten better.
